What if several people have actually already succeeded at separate times and places but they always get caught in the wacky shenanigans of accidentally shrinking yourself and then we never find them and don't understand the device they built so now there are just a half dozen shrink rays in storage rental units around the world, placed there by confused and grieving family members.
